Carolina is transforming how we interact with mobile maps
At the Berlin office, Carolina leads operations for one of our Research & Development teams. As Head of Operations, she’s helping build platform solutions for intermodal routing and indoor mapping, as well as outdoor and indoor positioning technologies.
How would you describe HERE in 3 words?
Exciting, rewarding and innovative.
What do you enjoy most about working at HERE?
Opportunities to learn. If you show mastery, commitment and a fit to the culture, you have tons of opportunities.
What about some challenges?
I think almost everything that I do at HERE is challenging in one way or another. First, because I like challenges, and second, because my managers know I like them. You get to do something that looks impossible at first, but then with time and the right resources we get it done. This is the magic that we do here.
What do you hope to achieve at HERE?
I really enjoy managing others, in the sense of helping people and teams deliver to their full potential. HERE helps support that too. For example, our performance management process is forward-looking. Instead of giving people feedback on their past achievements, you look forward and ask ‘How are you going to get there?' Then you get the support you need.
We also have a mentoring program where we match employees from different parts of the organization. It’s really rich for both the mentors and the mentees because you get to learn so much in the process. Plus, it’s a great way to give back and support new people.
What advice would you give to people looking to work at HERE?
I would say expect to work in a fast-paced environment where a lot changes – from the technology we use, to what we do, to how we do it. It’s important that people who want to join HERE have this combination of enthusiasm, passion and flexibility.
How is HERE different to other places you have worked?
One of the things that stands out is the access to so many possibilities for learning, like HERE University and the training. In Berlin, we have brown bag lunches where teams present the project they’re working on. Just today we learned about machine engineering interaction from people who attended a human computer interaction conference. What also makes these brown bag lunches neat is that they’re grassroots movements; they’re not organized by management, but by the people at HERE.
We learn so much from each other, and there’s so much diversity. We have about 65 different nationalities in our Berlin office alone.
“HERE is on a mission to make the mobility of people and goods stress-free, more sustainable and efficient. I work within the R&D team that directly supports this mission.”
What's it like to work at a place with so much diversity?
It's super cool. I’ve met some of my best friends in the company. And I learned so much by working with teams in different offices around the world too. It’s also enriching because not everybody thinks in the same way. From diversity comes richness. If everyone thinks in the same way to solve problems, you get the same solutions. Plus, people bring in cakes and new treats, and we get to learn about different cultures!
What is your office space like in Berlin?
I came here for a meeting and I wanted to make the move, so you can see that I am a fan. The office is a beautiful building, and every floor has a different theme. It was built by bringing together a lot of different groups from around the world, like people from Chicago and Finland. It doesn’t matter where you come from, you’ll find your group here.
There are also a lot of services and neat rooms, like a sauna, lounge, and garden, as well as a rooftop BBQ and terrace with a view overlooking Berlin. It’s also in the centre of the city, the neighborhood is bustling during the week, and calm on the weekends.
How do you like living in Berlin?
There are so many different things to do here. It doesn’t matter who you are or what you are into, Berlin is going to offer a possibility for you to explore that. Every single neighborhood has its own character. You can still feel like a tourist after several years by going to new neighborhoods. You have the liveliness of the clubs and the restaurants, but also the quietness of the lakes and greenness around the city. It’s easy to be in a forest right next to the city in no time at all.
What do you like to do outside of work?
One of the things I dedicate most of my time to is acting. I am a physical theatre actress, where you are mainly using your body to communicate. I also enjoy being outdoors, and running and hiking. Being in Berlin, it’s also very easy to travel to different nearby regions like Scandinavia and the south of Europe.
How does HERE help support your work-life balance?
I think HERE does a good job of that. We have some flexible hours where you can decide what time you are in the office and what time you’re not. HERE also promotes a kind of environment where we work hard but every person has their commitments, and we support each other. This is really important.
