The importance of data collaboration
Working together to do great things
At HERE, we believe that collaboration among carmakers, transport providers and road transit authorities makes for the best mobility services. By collaborating, we build scale, which results in services that truly make a difference to people.
As a location platform that builds connections across the mobility ecosystem, HERE is a champion of this idea.
Why a car-to-cloud data standard?
One challenge that has confronted the automotive industry is how to convert the vast oceans of sensor data generated by cars into useful services.
The data generated from sensors on board modern vehicles can be used to warn other cars on the road about traffic flows or possible dangers. The faster that can happen, the more efficient and safer our roads will become.
Yet the industry has faced a hurdle – there was not one single data specification that automotive companies could use. This has made sharing the data problematic.
Until 2015, when HERE kicked off discussions across the industry to help resolve this issues by developing a universal data format that would define consistent parameters for data gathered by all vehicles on the road.
The ultimate goal? To allow cars talk to and understand each other. This would lead to fewer accidents and more efficient journeys. Such a data standard would also be critical to moving the industry toward cars that can fully understand their environment and drive themselves.
The birth of SENSORIS
In mid-2016, following successful workshops with international automotive and mapping companies in Europe, the U.S. and Asia, a new universal data format–dubbed SENSORIS–was born.
HERE has now submitted SENSORIS to ERTICO – ITS Europe, Europe’s Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) organization combining public and private sector interests in ITS. ERTICO has agreed to continue to coordinate SENSORIS and evolve it into a standardized interface specification to be used broadly across the automotive industry.
To date, many leading automotive and supplier companies have already joined SENSORIS .

Introducing the first services built to the SENSORIS standard
In September 2016, HERE unveiled the first real-time data services for the automotive industry built on the SENSORIS data standard.
Launching in 2017 HERE will offer the first services of their kind to harness real-time vehicle sensor data from competing car brands, starting with data from Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz cars. These services, named HERE Road Signs, HERE Hazard Warning, and HERE On Street Parking, will be major automotive industry game-changers.
By employing the data standard and sharing their vehicle data with HERE these participating automotive brands are helping create services that realize the promise of SENSORIS, which is to make our roads safer and more efficient.
